Marvel's Wonder Man Preview Unveils Marvel's Most Meta TV Show To Date
Marvel has heard that viewers might be experiencing some superhero exhaustion, so they've decided to incorporate that very concept into their next superhero series.
Indeed, the debut trailer for Wonder Man has arrived, and it promises a self-referential angle on the MCU.
The preview, which debuted on October 10th, also quietly moved the Wonder Man release date later from its initial late 2025 window into January 2026.
Why one more superhero film? People is weary of superheroes. Why go see them in the cinema? Wonder Man spoke to me on a deep level. There is an opportunity to surprise audiences. To reinvent the whole category of storytelling.
The reporter replies: "Have you given any thought about casting?"
The preview then cuts to series star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who's viewing the interview on his mobile device, and the trailer concludes.
What We Know Regarding Wonder Man
We were previously aware that Wonder Man would be a self-referential interpretation on the MCU. The series stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as the character Simon Williams, a Hollywood actor who becomes a super-powered being (Wonder Man).
The rest of the cast features Ben Kingsley reprising his role as Iron Man 3's Trevor Slattery, Demetrius Grosse as Eric Williams (also known as Grim Reaper), Ed Harris as Simon's manager Neal Saroyan, and Arian Moayed coming back as DODC agent P. Cleary.
The Studio's Meta-Humor Approach
We don't know much else about the storyline of Wonder Man, but it's evident that Marvel plans to laugh at its own tropes.
In the wake of Deadpool & Wolverine, it appears like the production company is fully committed on meta-humor. Will that work without the star power of its previous leads? Only time will tell.
