Gas Detonation Costs 3 Police Officers Amid Property Removal Operation in the Verona Area
Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and at least 15 people were hurt in a seemingly deliberate gas explosion at a rural property in the northern part of Italy.
Sequence of Events
The blast occurred as officers and emergency crews approached the residence close to Verona to execute an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.
Each of the three officers killed were members of the Carabinieri force.
Legal Proceedings
A man and a woman got detained at the scene and one more individual who fled after the incident was found not long after. Each of them have been transported to the hospital.
The explosion could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and photographs from the location displayed the structure turned into a mass of wreckage.
“This moment calls for sorrow,” said the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who noted that efforts had been made to displace the three siblings in the earlier times.
Financial Context
The president of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, explained the farmhouse was under an removal notice due to debts accumulated by the three owners.
Negotiators had been sent to engage the brothers and sister who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the officers came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe one of the siblings caused the explosion.
“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander Commander Papagno told news outlets.
“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the detonation immediately struck our members,” he explained.
Incendiary devices were also found at the property, the minister confirmed.
Injuries and Destruction
Those injured by the incident included 11 other members of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a fire services member.
As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.
He believed the detonation had occurred on a floor above the doorway and stated to reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the incident, he mentioned members had “heard a whistle, presumably the gas cylinders being activated”.
Community Reaction
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants told local news, noting that the family members had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.
“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto joined other government officials in commemorating the trio of personnel who had died in the performance of their duties.
